PAULITE WEB - Poems By Tony Davies
Pilgrimage
|
It's been a long journey
But it's end is in sight,
Flying into Dum-Dum
You alight from your flight,
Into the terminal,
Make sure the connection is made,
Book in your luggage,
Check that duties are paid.
Sit back and wait now,
A little time to unwind,
A little time to ponder
On what changes you'll find.
It's been forty years
Since the last time you came,
It's too much to hope
That things are the same.
You arrive at the Hotel,
It's much as before,
"Like coming home" you think
As you shut your room door.
Excitement is mounting,
But first you must sleep,
The journey's been long,
And Darjeeling will keep.
You open the window,
Smells and noises abound,
This is what you've been wanting,
And now it is found.
At breakfast you eat quickly,
There's so much to do,
Darjeeling is out there
Just waiting for you.
"St. Paul's School, Darjeeling"
Says the voice on the line,
"I'd like to visit"
"Today sir, that's fine"
The appointment is kept,
You arrive via Top Field,
The school is waiting,
With old secrets to yield.
Memories flood back
As you walk round the school,
Of lessons cherished,
Of playing the fool!
You see your old bed
As you visit the Dorm,
Try to find your old desk --
Your place in the form.
Too soon the visit's over,
You say your goodbyes,
You turn away quickly,
The tears in your eyes,
Nostalgia still floods
As you walk down the track,
It wasn't a mistake!
It was worth coming back!
Memories to last a lifetime,
As you know they will,
For there's no place on earth
Like our school on the hill.
