Spring Tornadoes Hit Southern Minnesota

On Sunday, March 29, 1998, several tornadoes struck the Southern Minnesota cities of Comfrey, Hanska, Courtland, Nicollet and Saint Peter. Hardest hit were the cities of Comfrey (pop. 500) and Saint Peter (pop 10,000). The timeline of the tornadoes was: Comfrey(4:30pm), Hanska(5:00pm), Courtland(5:05pm), Nicollet(5:18pm) and Saint Peter(between 5:30 and 5:45pm). The entire system was reportedly one and a quarter mile wide, on the ground for 60+ miles, had wind speeds of over 200 miles and hour and had 16 touchdowns!!

So, you ask.... what does that have to do with me and my website? Well..... I went to Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter from 1985-1989. I was a member of the Saint Peter Area Ambulance and other Emergency Services in the City of Saint Peter and the County of Nicollet. Saint Peter was home to me for almost 10 years. Though I do not live in Saint Peter anymore, I have a lot of friends there and the devastation that I saw first hand has been a shock. Here are photographs that I took when I was volunteering with Emergency Services in Saint Peter, along with some links to other sites that have photographs and information.

My heart goes out to the entire town of Saint Peter, Comfrey and other cities affected by the tornadoes. I wish them the very best in their recovery.
